MEMORY

RECEPTION

On October 3, 2013, 368 people died off the coast of Lampedusa.
Since then, we have been working with European schools to build a different concept of immigration, create memory, support reception and inclusion policies and build a victims’ DNA database.

Comitato 3 Ottobre – Past and present

Comitato 3 Ottobre is a non-profit organization that aims to raise awareness on issues of integration and acceptance through dialogue with citizens, students and institutions.

On October 3, 2013, in a shipwreck off the coast of Lampedusa, 368 migrants lost their lives. 155 people survived including 41 minors. For this reason, we have identified October 3 as a symbolic date, not only to commemorate the victims of that shipwreck but to remember the thousands of people who regularly die drowning in the Mediterranean Sea or remain stranded at the eastern borders of Europe.

On March 16, 2016, the Italian Senate gave final approval to the Committee’s bill to establish the “Day of Remembrance and Reception”, to be celebrated on October 3 every year.

Our goals

To inform and involve the new generations in the debate on the migration phenomenon through educational activities both nationally and internationally. We also carry out Advocacy actions within the Italian and European institutions.

To create a European DNA database for the recognition of victims and reform the Dublin Regulation.

To promote the immigrant population’s integration and inclusion in the local communities of arrival in Italy. These are essential for the social cohesion of an increasingly intercultural country.

To support the opening of humanitarian corridors and legal and safe entry systems to put an end to the violation of human rights and deaths at sea.

Our mission

We build memory and integration through training projects on the migration phenomenon and organize a range of activities aimed at informing and raising public awareness and promoting equal rights and opportunities for people seeking asylum in Italy.
